Today, we are taking a big step.
We have formed a non-profit organization — Citizens Oakland — to sustain Oakland Report for the benefit of residents and readers.
One year ago, we started Oakland Report to shine a light on the truth underlying Oakland’s function and disfunction. It was just an experiment, born of our frustration with the state of the city and the lack of information on root causes.
To our delight, readers responded with enthusiasm. We’ve had a quarter million views of our work. And we’ve changed the conversation in town.
We’ve done it with just a few volunteers, and no money except for a few hundred dollars out of our own pocket.
We ask for your support this holiday season to grow Oakland Report and keep it free for all to read.
We aim to create a new approach to local news — deep, quantitative, and data-driven — but still accessible to the layperson.
We believe that residents want someone to ask: “Is that really true? Where is the evidence? How does that add up?”
Your donation will help Oakland Report to hire top-tier journalists, intensify our research, deepen our data analytics, cover more topics, and reach a broader audience with new media formats.
Together, we can reshape the conversation in Oakland and help the city flourish once again.
Thank you for reading, sharing, and your generous support.
